Happy Monday friends! Today I have a quick and easy DIY recipe for peppermint sugar body scrub. If you remember from my Baby Shower post, these were the party favors we sent home with guests.
For the sugar scrub you will need:
Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil
White Sugar
Essential Oil (I chose peppermint)
Container (I used jelly jars)
Instructions:
There really isn’t a perfect ratio for the scrub, all you really need to do is mix all 3 ingredients together to your liking. I start by mixing 3 tbsp coconut oil with 1 cup sugar which will make the scrub pretty exfoliating. If it’s too gritty for your preference, you can add more oil in until you get your desired exfoliating level. Once you’re happy with the ratio, add 4 drops of peppermint essential oil per cup of scrub.
For the party favors, I used jelly jars because they’re smaller and have the decorative diamond-cut sides. To decorate, I used the lid of one of the jars to trace circles on a file folder from the Target $1 bin, I then cut the circles out and slipped them under the ring of the lid. There was a lot of scrap folder left over which I cut into little circles for the scrubs’ labels. I then punched a hole in the top of the label, threaded it through some white tulle, and tied the tulle into a knot. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
As long as you use organic coconut and essential oils, the scrub is safe to use on your face but just avoid your eye area. My husband and I have been using this for a few months now and we both have noticed that it has cleared up our faces and made them silky smooth! This has been by go-to gifts for thank you gifts, birthdays, mother’s day, etc. It’s the perfect homemade treat!
Heads up: coconut oil is a saturated fat so it will harden at room temperature. Usually this isn’t a problem if you made your scrub more exfoliating but if the scrub is difficult to get out then I recommend using in the shower so the steam will soften up the oil and make it easier to use. If your home is hot and the oil has melted, you can stick the oil in the fridge to harden it up again.
Let me know if you give this a try!

Help! I used coconut oil…melted it first in the microwave after mixing my ingredients and placed in mason jar went to use it the next day and it was hard as a rock I was unable to even get it out of the jar… 🙁 its solid as a rock….what did i do wrong…
No worries! Coconut oil is a saturated fat which means it gets hard at room temperature. That’s why I recommended using in the shower so the heat will help make it easier to use but not turn it into a pure liquid. You could also run it under hot water in the sink to warm it up before using!
Hope that helps,
Natalie
how much coconut oil do i i use?
It depends on how much final product you want in the end. Use a 3:1 sugar:oil ration so for 1 cup scrub use 3/4 cup sugar + 1/4 cup oil.
Hope that helps!

I am really excited about trying this DIY Peppermint Sugar Scrub and the Coconut Oil Scrub with Essential Oils. They sounds so amazing! The question that I have is the Ratios. I seen the Ratio 3:1, that you converted to cups. Can you please tell me the Ratio 4:1 to cups? Cause I have no idea. I suck at measuring unless it’s stated on the measuring cups, Tablespoons, and Teaspoons. Thanks so much and I’m really enjoying everything you have on your site?
Hi Jenny! For the ratio of 4:1, you just do 4 parts sugar to 1 part coconut oil (so 4 cups sugar + 1 cup oil, or 4 tbsp sugar + 1 tbsp oil, etc.) Hope that helps!
Hello, I wanted to make sugar scrubs to help make myself some extra income. I tried a few including a salt scrub. They all turned hard as a rock a few days later. Did I do something wrong? I used grapeseed oil instead of coconut oil. It that the problem? I also stored they in an air tight mason jar.
Thanks in advance
Sara
Hi Sara,
I haven’t used grapeseed oil before so I’m not sure how that affects the ratio. If it’s a saturated fat (like coconut oil is) then it will harden at room temperature and you’ll want to add in more sugar to balance out the oil. I recommend starting with 2 tbsp oil to 1 cup sugar to start out with. Hope that helps!
Thanks,
Natalie
